Of Shoes and Brains
But how could it be? What are the possible links?
A decades-long study involving 25 schools around the world found that children were more engaged when learning in a shoeless environment!
It is researchers at the University of Bournemouth that found that youngsters are more likely to behave better and obtain better grades than their peers when going shoeless. To add to it, they are also more likely to arrive to school earlier, leave later and read more widely. This would results, ultimately, in better grades!
If some experts believe that removing their shoes for classroom improves their learning because it makes them feel more at home, one could think that it’s a bit more than that.
In actuality, going shoeless has to have an impact of the stimulation of the receptors found in the foot (skin and muscles). These receptors, activated via pressure, friction and movement, activate key areas in the brain responsible for lighting up cognitive areas such as the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is the powerhouse for learning and behavior!
